What Are the Roles a Mid-Level Provider?

Our last article went over the roles of a Medical Assistant which included building trusting relationships with the patients, verifying patients medical history, preparing clinical exam rooms, assisting with imaging and lab tests, performing basic clinic functions, performing basic administrative duties, and documenting appointments in patient file. Since Medical Assistants can be used clinically or administratively, our poll asked 'How are Medical Assistant Primarily Used in Your Office?' Fifty percent of respondents said 'Clinically', 17% said 'Administratively' and 33% said 'Both Equally'. A good Medical Assistant can greatly reduce the amount of work the clinicians do so that they can focus on quality care for their patients.

This post will go over the general tasks of Mid-Level Providers. In this article we are referring to Mid-Level Providers as Physician Assistants (PA), Nurse Practitioners (NP) and Dental Hygienists. They do a lot of tasks dependent on their own professional judgement however, they still have obligations to the office and the owner of the practice that they work for. In order to satisfy the needs of the patients and the needs of the practice, we recommend six primary duties.

Roles of a Mid-Level Provider:

Support the Owner and Practice Manager

  • Follow directions or recommendations given by the practice manager. (These are likely being given to them by the owner.)

  • Be a positive bridge between staff and patients.

  • Talk positively about the owner to staff and patients (including outside of work and home).

  • Discuss any issues privately and discretely with the practice manager or owner.

  • Help with front office duties during down time.

Support Team Members

  • Talk positively about staff to patients.

  • Interact with team members positively and respectfully.

  • Help with back office duties during down time.

  • Provide input at staff meetings to better the work environment and make things more efficient

Provide Preventative and Therapeutic Treatment

  • Complete any tasks that the license permits to reduce the clinical burden on owner.

  • Educate patients on medications, post-treatment directions, and preventative care.

  • Document processes and protocols and update them as they change.

  • Keep detailed record on patient appointments.

Sell Medicine or Dentistry and the Practice

  • Recommend products and preventative treatments that would benefit patient even if it is not covered by insurance.

  • Solidify the doctors diagnosis with lab results, pictures, x-rays, and explanation of necessity of the recommended treatment before the patient leaves.

  • Ensure recommended treatment is communicated to front desk and encourage patient to schedule treatment before leaving.

  • Solicit your satisfied patients for positive reviews.

  • Provide an exceptional experience to raise patient retention and patient referrals.

Promote Compliance with Laws

  • Attend OSHA training to protect yourself and coworkers from safety hazards at work.

  • Follow HIPPA regulations to protect patients personal information.

  • Keep professional liability insurance to protect yourself from errors.

  • Take specific continuing education credits that count towards license renewal.

Stay Relevant

  • Stay up to date with current guidelines.

  • Read scholarly articles to create fact based opinions on new products using your professional judgement.

  • Take classes on technology that you are unfamiliar with.

  • Get certified for equipment that provides a therapeutic benefit to your patients.

  • Attend conventions to learn about new products and ideas.

Mid-level providers should be doing everything they can within their scope of practice. Only tasks that require the doctors knowledge and license should be done by the doctor. This will allow for the doctor to focus on the quality of patient care. It will also allow the doctor as the owner to focus on the business aspect of their practice. Employing competent Mid-Level Providers will ensure that the practice runs as efficiently as possible because the owner can confidently delegate many of the clinical tasks to these staff members.
