What Are You Missing In Your Employee Social Media Policy?

This week, we will discuss what you need to include in your social media policy. I have a dermatology client with two all-star mid-level providers who are creating their own brand.

To compare, let's look at LeBron James. LeBron is a brand, but so is the team he plays on. We have a unique situation where there is a brand within a brand. At one time he was brand LeBron with brand Cleveland, but then he changed to brand Miami and then back to brand Cleveland and now is brand LA. His uniform varied but with each change he perpetually remained brand LeBron. So how should your employee social media policy reflect this?

Your employee policy must include that all social media that comes from your associates and relates to your business must be approved by you or your delegate if:

  • The associate uses any of your office equipment.

  • The associate uses your office location inside or out.

  • The associate uses your patients or office staff for models.

There must also be guidelines regarding the content. We suggest the following:

  • If it is a picture, then your logo should be prominent in the picture.

  • If it is a video, then your logo should be in the entirety of the video.

  • Their bio should reference your website.

  • During a video, they should credit you, the owner and/or the practice during the video.

  • Ideally they would include a simple opening or ending for your practice. This can either be a common video or perhaps words.

  • They should wear the practice's uniform with the business logo during any video or picture.

When you implement these things, it might discourage your "all-stars" from posting content and this is something you don't want. We suggest that you hire or assign a front office staff member to help them edit the content so it gets published. The number one goal is to get the content published as long as your office gets the appropriate credit for it.
