How Should Your Office Manager Be Leading Your Staff?

In our last post, we advised that your office manager should be leading the collections effort. Additionally, we detailed several necessary tasks required to be successful in collecting patient balances. The related poll was concerning the financial policy of your office and we asked 'At what point do you send your patients to collections?' Of the four ranges, 80% of respondents answered '90 days' while 20% answered 'We do not send our patients to collections'. Obviously the goal is to collect patient balances at time of service and insurance balances within the first 30 days. This week we are going to talk about how the office manager must 'lead the staff'.
Powerful employee leadership will reduce turnover, and a reduction in turnover increases quality over time. In order to set a good example for the staff, the office manager must work with integrity and humility as well as be punctual and productive. Here is a complete checklist of how the office manager leads the staff.
Initiates and maintains positive and respectful office vibe to employees and patients.
Ensures that work being done by non-provider staff is completed on time and with high-quality.
Regularly updates the employee manual.
Regularly holds effective employee reviews.
Acts a standard of professionalism at all times.
This list indicates that a 'people person' is favored over a 'numbers person' when considering an office manager. When the staff is expected to perform well, they need a leader who will provide inspiration to do so.
